Biography
Documentary photographer Marc Asnin was born in Brooklyn in 1963 and resides in New York City. His work has appeared in magazines such as The New Yorker; The New York Times Magazine; Time; Life; and Newsweek. Since 1981 Asnin has photographed his Uncle Charlie and his family, amassing a raw, unflinching collection of images that tell the story of one man’s struggle with mental illness, poverty, drug addiction, and profound isolation.
His has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. Asnin was a recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Artist in Residence Program. His work has received numerous accolades, most notably the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, and a NEA Fellowship, the NY Foundation for the Arts. Asnin has taught at the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts and his images are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the City of New York.
