Kebedech Tekleab was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She studied visual arts at the Fine Art School of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and earned her BFA and MFA in painting from Howard University in Washington DC.
Tekleab is a published poet, painter, sculptor, and installation artist. Currently, she lives in New York City as a studio artist. She is also an Assistant Professor of Art at the City University of New York, Queensborough Community College. Previously, she taught at Howard University and The Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD).
Her selected shows include exhibits at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, Illinois; Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia; Orlando Museum of Art, Orlando, Florida; Museum of Art, Deland Florida, Rockland Art Center in Nyack, New York; and the Sidney Mishkin Gallery, Baruch College, New York City, and Columbia University in New York. Her upcoming shows include an international group show in Thessaloniki, Greece, and a solo show at the Museum of American University in Washington DC.
Her works are included in permanent collections at several institutions, including the Holocaust Museum in Chicago, Illinois, Archives-Navy Memorial Washington DC, American Embassy in Addis Ababa, and Ethiopian Embassy in Washington DC.
