Leonard Kahan is a retired owner of the L. Kahan Gallery of African Art in New York. The holder of an M.F.A. from Brooklyn College, he has also been an exhibition artist and has taught art in Brooklyn and Queens College in New York. He traveled extensively in Africa and is certified as an appraiser of African Art by the American Appraisers Association. In addition to presenting African art to the public, he consistently sought out scholars in the field, sponsoring catalog publications and exhibitions, including Africa’s Cross River: Art of Nigerian-Cameroon Border (1980), and Gestures in African Art (1982), both by Barbara Jarocki; and African Art from New Jersey Collections (1983), by Marshall Mount.
