MichaelÂ BransonÂ Smith is a web artist and associateÂ professor ofÂ Communications Technology at York College, The City University of New York. He holds an MFA from Tufts University,Â School of the Museum of Fine Arts,Â and an MS in Chemistry from theÂ University of ChicagoÂ (admittedly, a strange combination). MBS presently spends a lot of time creatingÂ animated GIFs, particularly with aÂ nostalgic eyeÂ or byÂ remixing with artists and friends. He regularly teaches aÂ course on digital storytellingÂ inspired by theÂ DS106Â community. He is alsoÂ a multi-media producer of industrial work principally for not-for-profits â€“ including video, artwork, and design.
MBS works on special projects for theÂ CUNY Academic Commons, a home-grown academic social network built with the open-source tools WordPress/BuddyPress. He contributes to regular discussions on the current status and future direction of the siteâ€™s development plan. As well asÂ reflect on the projectÂ including the inherent values of Commons andÂ its importanceÂ to CUNY.
