Gallery Museum Studies Program

In conjunction with the Department of Art & Design the Gallery Museum Studies (GMS) Program is one of the longest running Associates Degree programs in this field of study.

Students enrolled in Gallery and Museum Studies classes which include Introduction to Gallery and Museum Studies, Art Business and Institutions, and Art Curating. Other relevant course offerings including Chemistry for the Arts, History of Graphic Design, History of Photography, History of African Arts, History of Asian Arts as well as more general Art History surveys.

The QCC Art Gallery offers unique, hands-on, career building experiences via for-credit internships. Students participating in coursework and internships at the gallery learn to use museum-standard collections management software and acquire skills in object handling.

Graduates of the program go on to complete BA programs at colleges including Columbia University, Queens College, Hunter College, Fashion Institute of Technology, and Purchase College to name a few. With some of our faculty also teaching in the CUNY School of Professional Studies Museum Studies MA Program, QCC graduates have also made a smooth transition to completing an MA in this field of study at SPS as well at other institutions.

Graduates of the QCC GMS program have gone on to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Art and Design, the Bronx Museum of Art, and MoMA PS1 among other museums. Graduates are employed in various areas of the field including collections management, visitor services, museum education, conservation, and museum programming. On the commercial side our alumni are working at art galleries, fashion houses, art fairs, and in arts education. A strong network of alumni; faculty with experience doing what they teach; and courses offered online, hybrid, and in-person have made for significant graduate success.
